Slaley Film Shows for 2010 – 2011
Here is the programme for our seventh season, starting in September 2010, and finishing in May 2011. The rating for each film is shown in brackets after the title.
Shows in the Commemoration Hall are always on a Friday evening, starting at 7.30 pm (doors open at 7 pm). The admission charge of £5 (£3 for under 16s) includes your supper, but not a drink (you’re welcome to bring your own). If you are bringing a party of 4 or more, or have special dietary needs, it would be helpful to let us know (on 01434 673443).
We extend an invitation to all from Slaley, Hexhamshire, Blanchland, and Tynedale in general!

September 17th, 2010 “Looking for Eric” (15)
A Ken Loach film about Eric the postman, whose life is collapsing. His wife has gone, and his stepsons are out of control, so Eric turns to his hero: footballing genius, philosopher and poster boy, Eric Cantona.


October 15th, 2010 “The Lives of Others” (15)
A remarkable film showing how the Stasi monitored the citizens of East Germany, which tells how agent Gerd Wiesler becomes enchanted by and sympathetic to the couple he is listening in on, and starts to rebel.
November 19th, 2010 “The Lost World of Mr Hardy” (PG)
Once upon a time, two brothers from a tiny town in the far north of England, set out to capture the hearts and minds of fishing maharajahs, film stars and royalty the world over. The family firm of Hardy’s has been synonymous with fishing ever since.
December 17th, 2010 “Millions” (12A)
The UK is about to switch its currency from Pounds to Euros, giving a gang a chance to steal the money on its way to incineration. During the robbery, one of the big bags falls literally from the sky on Damian’s playhouse, who talks to saints.
January 21st, 2011 “The Pursuit of Happyness” (12A)
Based a on a true story, this tear-jerking tale of a single father’s struggle to raise his son in the extreme poverty of the Reagan era served as an Oscar showcase for Will Smith.
February 18th, 2011 “Up in the Air” (15)
From the director of Juno, a sharply scripted and crisply directed story set in the world of high flying business travel. George Clooney is at his smooth, sardonic best as Ryan Bingham, a management consultant specialising in the field of firing people.
March 18th, 2011 “Brokeback Mountain” (15)
A raw, powerful story of two young men, a Wyoming ranch hand and a rodeo cowboy, who meet in the summer of 1963 sheepherding in the harsh, high grasslands of contemporary Wyoming and form an unorthodox yet life-long bond.
April 15th, 2011 “Morris: A Life with Bells On” (12)
Following the life of one rebel Morris dancer Derecq Twist, beset by prim traditionalists, it tells the story of one man’s struggle to drag, kick and cajole an ancient practice into the 21st Century, in the nicest possible way, of course.
May 20th, 2011 “The Constant Gardener” (15)
From a novel by John Le Carre and set in Kenya, this is a dramatic thriller about a diplomat who meets and falls in love with outspoken humanitarian Tessa, but only grows to truly understand his wife after she’s dead.
