Bus service: your views are needed!

To everyone who used or still uses the public transport service through Slaley Parish:

  • Earlier this year (February) you provided details of your usage and/or needs from the daily coach service.  Slaley Parish Council intends to submit a six month review in September to Ian Coe, Passenger Transport Manager at County Hall, detailing the hardships experienced, or the success, of the revised single daily bus service. Basically we need to know if the single daily service has reduced the quality of life for you and if so how.
  • The previous 870 service provided four daily trips into Hexham and four trips from Hexham.  Since April the 689 single daily journey is due at Slaley Townhead at 10.24, arriving at Hexham by 10.39.  Departure from Hexham is at 13.11 and arrival at Townhead 13.26.  Four journeys remain for a Saturday.
Central Government recently announced the Local Sustainable Transport Fund, which allows local authorities (NCC not Slaley Parish Council) to bid for additional funding to support economic growth and reduce carbon emissions.  £10 million of new funding has also been distributed to rural local transport authorities in England to support and kick start the development of community transport services in their area.  How, if at all, this will effect our local bus service is still to be determined.
Your assistance with collating the necessary information to make a researched six-month review would be greatly appreciated.
To do this, please fill in the following survey form (or pick up a paper copy from the Village Shop); click on the ‘?’ button for further details on each section.
The Parish Council would appreciate your comments by September 5th.
Additional fuel consumption? ?
Have you used more fuel getting family members to their destinations?
Any problems with employment? ?
What problems has a single daily service caused for your employment?
Any Health issues? ?
Any problems the single service has caused with health issues – appointments at doctors, hospital, optician, dentist. etc.
Teenage users ?
Unsuitability for Teenage use during the long summer school holiday. A daily journal of teenage travel expenditure during the summer holiday would be a useful tool in our arguments for increased provision during school holidays.
Connection problems? ?
Does a single service cause problems for connection to other network providers for shopping outside of Hexham and Consett (i.e. Metro Center, Newcastle city or Carlisle city)?
Are you using other providers? ?
Are you using other providers - private taxi firm, ADAPT? If yes, why are you using the alternative provider – is it length of stay in Hexham or some other reason?
Is there enough time allowed? ?
Is the single daily service allowing sufficient time to visit friends and family in hospital, to make appointments with solicitors, to have a hairdresser's appointment, etc.?
Problems in May? ?
During the last week of May a parish highway was closed for resurfacing and the coach was unable to travel between the Glen crossroads and Townhead. Go North East who provide the 689 service decided that there would be no service in the village as a reversing manoeuvre was outside the drivers health and safety policy. Did you know there would be no public service while the road was closed? Did the lack of service cause you any hardships that week?
