Slaley Carpet Bowls welcomes newcomers!

Slaley Carpet Bowls Club meets in the Commemoration Hall every Tuesday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Carpet Bowls is really good fun! The hall on a Tuesday night is full of great humour, good and bad bowls and excellent chat. Newcomers are made to feel really welcome and soon pick up on the 'right bias' and the good fun. There is always a break for a good cup of tea and natter.
There are usually about 12-16 people there with ages ranging from teenager to wontadmitit or indeterminate!! The club plays friendly yet competitive matches against local villages, and no matter what the bowls is like the supper is premier league class, whether it's at home or away. Give it a try you - are sure to enjoy it.

Contact Ken or Joyce Hall on 673451 for further details, or just turn up on a Tuesday night.

Comments turned OFF!

The system which is used to manage this website (called Movable Type) allows readers to add their own comments on selected pages, and even engage in conversations. You may have seen some comments on entries here, although few people have used this feature in practice. You can see such a link at the foot of this entry, labelled 'Comments(1)' (but for reasons explained below, you can't add any more).

However in the past few months, this website has been receiving a lot of what has been called "comment spam", consisting of often innocuous remarks but also including links back to commercial and sometimes unsavoury websites. The aim of this is to increase the number of links to such sites, and influence their position in search listings (e.g. from Google or Yahoo). This is probably an automated process, with our website being on a list of possible targets . . .
Nearly a hundred such comments have been received to date, and I have decided for the moment to turn off all comment options on this site. When I upgrade the system to the next version (which includes mechanisms for detecting such comment spam), I will re-enable the comment feature.

The layout may change

The appearance of this site's pages may soon change as we develop the organisation and layout of the site; however all the contributed material will be retained, and the system will automatically keep past contributions in a set of 'archives'.
One idea is to use a different picture on the home page each month: this "Picture of the Month" will be selected by the Editor, and you are invited to send in photographs, drawings or paintings for next month's entry! Just ring the Editor (673443) or send an email to: editor@slaley.org.uk

How to contribute

The system used to manage this website (called "Movable Type") will allow anyone to contribute items of interest; all you will need is access to a computer with an Internet connection (such as the machines in the Commemoration Hall), and a "Username" and password which you can request from the Editor (Michael Elphick, 'phone 673443).
Full details of how to contribute articles and pictures will be available soon, and will be sent to anyone taking up this offer.
As well as providing longer articles, anyone can add their comments to entries (such as this one) which have a box labelled 'Comments' at the foot. Why not try it out?

We really do need your input to make this a useful facility for Slaley!

About this website

Welcome to the new Slaley website! Thanks to the Parish Council, who have provided the funds to start up and maintain this site, we now have another way of reading and exchanging news and views about Slaley.
These web pages will not replace the Parish Magazine, or the "Slaley Notes" column in the Hexam Courant, but will (we hope) add to them.
