Janis, I have recently applied for a job in slaley as I hope to relocate to a rural environment, which in turn is how I came to be looking at information on Slaley. I enjoyed your article, which was well written and well judged. You are right to point out that essentially divisions that stem from resentment or insecurity, etc, can only lead to further breakdown of a community. If I am eventually successful in my efforts to move to your area I feel heartened that I will be given the courtesy of a chance to show what I can contribute, from at least one person. Regards, Gerard.

Got a new `puter in the middle of Feb so decided to take the plunge. ADSL modem appeared and was duly plugged in with appropriate filters. Wait a few days while BT removed the DACS box from your line said the lady on the help line. After a few days the line went dead.
We can send an engineer in 6 days said BT. Whoever disconected the DACS box didn`t connect your line back to the exchange reports the engineer.
Phone back on but still the ADSL light on the modem flashes.
Back to the help line, for the umpteenth time I`m asked where the modem cables go, how many extensions, please reload the drivers.
We will refer it back to BT. Twice BT claim to have been to the exchange and fixed the problem - still nowt.
Eventually BT man appears in yard, tests everything in house, tests exchange and declares that the prob is somewhere on the line between the house and the exchange, but it`s knocking off time so I can not do anything today.
Hear nothing for a few days so back to the helpline. Another BT appointment needed - 6 days time. Hear nothing on the day, next day engineer rings, the fault is underground, will pass it to underground dept, they should be out in a day or so because it is preventing anyone east of Wooley getting broadband. That was 2 weeks ago and still waiting.

I have the basic BT deal, 5min setup - too easy for the amount of expense. I think that's a complimentary comment, but I'm not sure it's a sign of something else.
It should be less expensive, but it is a real life style change.
At least an hour a day saving for me - time is money.

Have signed up to Bt Broadband 1Mb and running three computers on a wireless router. The download speeds are 20x faster compared with the old modem (56K) and I am very pleased with the new service.
