Carpet Bowls Group
End of season report for Slaley Carpet Bowls Club
Slaley Carpet Bowls Club meets in the Commemoration Hall every Tuesday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The season for 2018 started on September 18th and ended on March 26th 2019.
It has been a really good year, club nights have been well attended, new players have come and tried the game and some have stayed with it and are now regular bowlers.
We had open events for the Slaley school parents and children and for the WI, with both organisations having a great time and wanting to repeat it next year.
We arrange 18 fixtures against other villages in the area this resulted in 11 wins, 4 defeats, 3 matches cancelled.
Some of the games were village carpet bowls at their very best with 7 games decided by a win of 5 or less points, amazingly close after over 1000 bowls bowled on the night!!
Looking forward to September we will be hosting ‘village tea with a difference’ in aid of the village hall and then we’ll be back bowling in September.
From the 2018 season:
Slaley Carpet Bowls Club meets in the Commemoration Hall every Tuesday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The season for 2018 will start on September 18th. Matches start with an away match on 18th October against Haydon Bridge.
We have reached the mid point of our season which starts in September and there have been a number of very close matches, so far it is won 4 lost 4. We lost to the very strong teams from the Shire, Newbrough and Stamfordham and the excellent bowlers from Riding Mill. There have been wins against Haydon Bridge, Snods, Catton and Corbridge.
Three of the games were very close, wins by 2 and 5 points and a loss by 6 points. Each point is earned by the closest balls in each of the 4 ends of a game, so a win by 5 points is effectively 5 better balls in the whole match!! An amazingly close call when you think there are 16 players on each team and it’s a 3 hour contest with over 1000 balls being bowled.
There have been plenty of club nights all well attended and with some new bowlers who have really taken to the game and are joining in all the fun and the matches too.
Our annual dinner at Christmas in the Rose and Crown was well attended and it was a ‘right good do’.
We start again in January when apart from the 29th there are club nights on every Tuesday starting at 7:30. New bowlers are very welcome. There is also an away match on Thursday 10 January 2019 at Riding Mill.
In January we hope to have a couple of 'bowl for fun' events in our excellent village hall. The first event will be for the WI on Wednesday 9th January and then there will be an open day on Sunday 20th January that will be open to all who want to 'give bowling a go'
Carpet Bowls is really good fun! The hall on a Tuesday night is full of great humour, good and bad bowls and excellent chat. Newcomers are made to feel really welcome and soon pick up on the 'right bias' and the good fun. There is always a break for a good cup of tea and natter.
There are usually about 12-16 people there with ages ranging from teenager to wontadmitit or indeterminate! The club plays friendly yet competitive matches against local villages, and no matter what the bowls is like the supper is premier league class, whether it's at home or away. Give it a try – you are sure to enjoy it. The fixtures for 2018/2019 are listed below.
