Slaley Leek Club

……will take place in the Commemoration Hall on Saturday 5th October. This will be the club’s 60th annual show. As well as the competition for leek club members there are forty-nine other classes of vegetable and flowers which anyone can enter. The flower categories attract competitors from all over the North-East and produce wonderful displays of dahlias and chrysanthemums. There are twenty classes of vegetables so why not enter something and support this great village show?...

Slaley Show

It was a sad task to have to put “Cancelled” notices  on our roadside signs, made even more awful by finding that Highways had taken down our signs. as luck would have it Anne Collier of Collier Framing happened to see our signs in the Highways depot and alerted Stella who was able to retrieve them. Many thanks to Anne. Highways have no obligation to notify us of their actions and our signs would just have been destroyed: a grievous cost to the Show....

Pond Dipping & Wild Flower Walk at Ladycross Nature Reserve

Starts at Ladycross Quarry gates at 1 p.m.  Pond Dipping Children and Water is a great combination for fun.  However, we do need to make sure the younger members of the walk have the necessary nets and trays so an idea of how many are coming is essential.   Wild Flower Walk The circular walk is approximately 1 mile, you will need appropriate footwear and clothing.  At the moment the route is not pushchair or wheelchair friendly – but we are working to address this. £5...

Illegal Killing of Buzzards in our area

There have been two illegal killings of buzzards reported recently in Hexhamshire and Blanchland. We have no idea who killed these birds, though logically it is someone with a licenced shotgun. The killers are breaking the law, tarnishing the reputation of our area and, most importantly, needlessly killing our precious native wildlife. We are appealing for information on these crimes. The Barley Hill Fund 2019

The Barley Hill Fund at the Community Foundation is open for applications in 2019. The Fund will award grants from £750 to £2,000 to projects which benefit the residents of Healey and Minsteracres Parish where the hall was situated. In 2018 the Fund made three awards totalling £5,075. Minsteracres Retreat Centre received two awards, £1,500 to help restore Wellington Pond, and £2,900 to help restore an area of heritage woodland called The Shrubbery with tree planting and interpretation ...
